There is a powerful idea making its way through American industry right now. It goes something like this: if forklifts stop moving, America stops moving.
Tom Albero, Chairman and CEO of Alliance Material Handling, put it plainly in a recent commentary. The supply chain does not run on technology alone. It runs on people. Skilled, trained, certified people who show up every day to warehouses, distribution centers, manufacturing plants, and job sites across this country and keep everything moving.
He is right. And as a California employer operating in this space, that idea should land very close to home.
Because here is what that truth means for your business specifically: the people operating your powered vehicles and forklifts are not just your workforce. They are your single greatest area of safety and compliance exposure. And most employers are not managing that exposure the way they should be.
Walk through any warehouse or facility and you will see the equipment. You probably invested significantly in it. What you may not be able to see as clearly is what protects you when something goes wrong.
It is not the forklift. It is the training record. The certification. The documented safety program. The written policies that prove your operators were properly qualified before they ever sat in that seat.
Cal/OSHA is very specific about powered industrial truck requirements. Operators must be trained and evaluated. That training must be documented. It must cover the specific types of equipment used in your facility, in your actual operating conditions. And it must be refreshed when there is an accident, a near miss, a change in conditions, or observable unsafe operation.
If you cannot produce that documentation when Cal/OSHA comes through your door, the equipment investment you made becomes far less important than the fine and liability exposure you are now facing.
Albero also raises something that every employer in warehousing, logistics, and manufacturing is feeling right now: there is a serious skilled workforce shortage in this country. Finding qualified operators, technicians, and logistics professionals is harder than it has ever been.
What that means in practice is that many employers are putting people into roles before they are truly ready. They are moving fast because they have to. And in doing so, they are creating safety and compliance gaps that may not show up until there is an incident.
The pressure to fill positions is real. But the cost of an unqualified operator behind the wheel of a 10,000-pound vehicle is something no business can afford, financially or otherwise.
CalWorkSafety & HR has spent 25 years working alongside California and Nevada employers in industries where the physical work is demanding, the compliance requirements are significant, and the margin for error is thin.
We understand the reality you are operating in. We know what Cal/OSHA expects. We know what proper forklift certification and train-the-trainer programs look like, and we know how to build safety training that actually holds up, not just on paper, but in the field and in front of an inspector.
If you are managing a team that operates powered vehicles, forklifts, or any industrial equipment, this is not an area to figure out as you go. The skilled workforce behind your operation deserves proper training. Your business deserves proper protection.
